What is The Artemide Story?

Artemide began when Ernesto Gismondi, an aerospace engineer, invested $500 for producing lamps in 1960. Together with Sergio Mazza, the two of them developed a small catalog of six items and designed their first lamp: Alfa. Though the opening catalog was humble with only six products, the two continued to develop as designers and manufacturers of lights. Arteminde’s original consumers were based in Italy, but eventually they gained popularity in Germany, France, America, and Asia. This served as a small sign to come, since Artemide now illuminates homes and businesses in more than 100 countries worldwide. 

However, before they grew to those heights of worldwide recognition, Artemide began to establish a vital company philosophy. The company continues to invest in their philosophy of “human light” through investigating forms of interaction between man, space, and light. In short, they seek an intellectual understanding of man’s relationship with light along with how light can impact overall well-being and quality of life. 

Who are Artemide Lighting’s Most Iconic Designers?

Perhaps the most infamous, iconic designers of Artemide are the two who founded the company: Ernesto Gismondi and Sergio Mazza. Aside from these monumental figures, one of Artemide’s most famous designers is Karim Rashid. Rashid has more than 4,000 designs in production and over 300 awards for his designs. All of the designers from Artemide have received accolades and admiration for their designs they created within the company, and with over 80 designers being credited for designing for Artemide, the lighting company truly is composed of masters of their craft.

Within the long history of Artemide, they have designed and manufactured many types of lightning. Although their indoor lighting collection may be most popular, Artemide has also designed outdoor lighting types such as outdoor spotlights, wall lights, and floor lamps.
